Backus Hospital operates the only Trauma Center east of the Connecticut River. Backus also has a support facility for LIFE STAR, Hartford Hospital's air medical transport helicopter.
Trauma sends no warning signs. It happens suddenly, unexpectedly. Trauma is currently the third leading cause of death in the United States, and the number one cause of death in persons under the age of 44 years. Besides loss of life, the cost to the victim, family and society in terms of disability is enormous, not to forget the time factor for recovery.
