The Dr. Sultan Ahamed Radiation Therapy Center is dedicated to providing you with state of the art, comprehensive radiation therapy for your cancer. We recognize and understand that a cancer diagnosis is a difficult experience for you and your family.

This outlines theprocess, services and people dedicated to helping you and your family obtain the assistance you may need while receiving radiation therapy.



​Departments & Services

Social Services
The Department of Social Services is available to you, your family/significant others to help you deal with issues that may occur while you are receiving cancer treatment.

The Social Services staff member can provide you with information about transportation, financial needs and community resources. They also offer emotional support and counseling to help you deal with issues such as lifestyle changes, emotions and stress management. If needed, they will also assist in arranging for nursing home transfers.


Rehabilitation/Physical Therapy

This Department consists of Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy. Each area is available to assist you in reaching the maximum level of independence during your cancer treatment. Some types of cancer therapy can cause limitations with walking, exercise and daily activities. Services offered are exercise, gait training, energy conservation, speech therapy and wound care. Staff will also provide information about equipment that may be needed for your recovery. There are also specialized programs for mastectomy patients and for managing lymphedema.

Clergy

There may be times when you want to address your spiritual needs. We would be pleased to contact our clergy staff on your behalf, or you may call them on your own. Meetings in a private environment can be arranged.


Genetic Counseling

Your physician may refer you to a genetics counselor if he/she feels that your cancer is linked to your family’s genetics. We will arrange for a genetics counselor to come to Backus Hospital to meet with you at your convenience.


Financial Counseling

Our financial counselors from Patient Accounts will meet with you if you have any concerns or financial issues regarding your billing.


Patient Support

When You Arrive
You will meet with our secretarial staff to complete your registration and sign consent forms. Please be aware that our Center is equipped with hearing devices that may be used during your visit should you or members of your family have difficulty hearing. Additionally, our Center staff will arrange for language and sign interpreters to assist in communicating, if necessary.

After the registration is completed you will be shown to the American Cancer Society (ACS) resource area. In this area you will be able to meet with an ACS volunteer who can assist you and your family in obtaining information on your disease. The volunteers will also inform you about support groups provided by the ACS. An ACS computer is also available to help you get the information you need. Refreshments are available to you at the nourishment center.

Within a short time, a nurse will greet you and escort you to a consultation room to begin the interview process. You will be asked many questions regarding your medical history, medications and current health. Please feel free to have your family and friends with you.

When the nursing interview is completed, you will meet with your doctor. He/she will discuss your diagnosis and treatment options.


Radiation Therapy Treatment

Preparing for Treatment

In preparation for planning the delivery of your treatment, you will have x-rays taken on the Simulator.

The physics staff, the radiation therapist, and your physician will prepare a treatment plan that is specialized for your cancer. At the completion of your simulation, you will be given an appointment to start your radiation treatments.

The radiation therapist will work with you to schedule your daily treatments. Our staff will do their best to accommodate your needs.

While you are receiving your radiation treatment, you will see your physician and nurse once a week to monitor your progress. The nurse and your therapist are available on a daily basis to answer any questions and to help you with any issues you may have. Please call if you have any questions about your treatment or medication, or about how you feel.
