Helping Cancer Patients During the Holidays

Script for Health
This summer and fall Backus collaborated with United Community & Family Services and Generations Family Health Center on a new program, Rx for Health, in which physicians “prescribed” farmers’ markets for children who are obese or at risk to be obese. The hospital is underwriting the cost through donations to its annual fund, which is focusing on obesity. Watch the video and find out more about how the program worked.
An Apple A Day

Great Tips for Beating the Heat
The forecast calls for some hot days ahead. It's important to play it smart and find ways to keep cool. It's also important to recognize the signs of more serious heat-related problems like heat stroke. Nader Bahadory, DO, from the Backus Emergency Department offers some great advice on dealing with hot summer days.

Screening Saves Lives
March is colon cancer awareness month. In this video, Dr. Shivani Sood, a gastroenterologist at Backus and Norwich GI Associates, PC, talks about the importance of screening for this disease. Each year more than 145,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer in the United States but the disease is largely preventable with regular screening and treatable with early detection. Dr. Sood also offers many tips on preventing the disease.

First bariatric surgeries performed at Backus
Mark Tousignant, MD, Medical Director of the Backus Weight Loss Center, performed the first two LAP-BAND® surgeries done at Backus Hospital on Sept. 7. The surgical procedures are part of an overall weight loss program that includes nutritional counseling, support groups and behavioral screenings.
