Weight Loss Center off to fast start

Dr. Mark Tousignant is Medical Director of the new Backus Weight Loss Center.

Since publicly announcing the new Backus Weight Loss Center, hundreds of patients have called and informational sessions are already filled through the end of October.

Visits to backushospital.org/bariatrics through mid-August were more than 1,000 and climbing.

“The response has been phenomenal and even beyond our expectations,” said Mark Tousignant, MD, Medical Director of the center. “Our research indicated there was a need for these services in Windham and New London Counties, and our experience so far certainly validates that is the case. We’re very enthused with what we have seen so far, and look forward to doing our part to help improve the obesity problem in the region.”

The Backus Weight Loss Center offers LAP-BAND® surgery, nutritional counseling, psychiatric screenings and support groups for patients. To qualify for the surgery, patients must:

  • Be at least 100 pounds overweight, or have a body mass index of 40 or a BMI of 35 and suffering from one or more severe obesity related health problems.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have been overweight for more than five years.
  • Be prepared to attend regular follow up sessions and make lifestyle changes.

The information sessions are held at least twice per month from 6-7 p.m. in the confer- ence rooms of the Backus Outpatient Care Center at 111 Salem Turnpike in Norwich. The sessions are required for those interested in the weight loss surgery, and people can register by calling 860-425-8740.
