NORWICH – One of The William W. Backus Hospital’s most visible presences in the community is grabbing even more attention, thanks to a donation from John Hansen of Camaro Signs in Norwich.

Camaro “wrapped” The Backus Mobile Health Resource Center van with larger-than-life images featuring Backus Nursing and Community Health Education Department’s Lisa Orowson,  RN, providing a blood pressure screening.

The donation of time and material by Camaro is a continuation of the generosity that had kept this health center on wheels going over the years. With the help of a $1 million donation from Norwich philanthropist Harold Ross, Backus Hospital established a Center for Preventative Health, which includes the van that travels to dozens of places in the community each month, from homeless centers to schools.

“We are very grateful to Camaro Signs for their generosity,” said Thomas P. Pipicelli, President and Chief Executive Officer at Backus. “This adds a great look to an already outstanding community service. It’s the kind of support hospitals like ours need.”

The 40-foot van contains an examination room, a computer and video resource center and a screening and counseling area.

The van offers a variety of services, including healthcare, education and health screenings. If an organization asks for a program, the staff tries to find an expert to present it.

The van focuses on preventative care, with screenings for cholesterol, diabetes, skin cancer, prostate cancer and more. It also visits schools, senior centers, nursing homes and community events.
