Cancer survivors to take stage as models
The William W. Backus Hospital is selling tickets and seeking sponsors for its 2011 Survivors in Fashion show, to be held Oct. 20 from 7-9 p.m. at the Fox Theatre. Approximately 20 cancer survivors will take part in the fashion show, which in addition to being a fundraiser shows that there is hope after being diagnosed with breast cancer. This year's theme is "We are a Family."

Donation links patients to community doctors
The Edward and Mary Lord Foundation has pledged $100,000 toward MyHealthDirect, an innovative tool at Backus Hospital that links patients who lack a primary care physician with appropriate healthcare providers. This provides more timely and ongoing care for patients, and reduces visits to the emergency room.

Your gift to Backus is a gift to the entire community...
At Backus, we rely on our donors to help chart the course of healthcare for eastern Connecticut. Last year — even as the national recession tightened its grip — donors helped keep healthcare moving forward. Our community provided $1.1 million in charitable gifts this past year. To generate those funds through hospital services would require additional revenues of $28 million, at a 4% operating margin.
We are always grateful for our donors’ support. Our benefactors make sure Backus stays on course.
WHY I SUPPORT BACKUS
Giving is my way of saying thank you to the hospital…it’s my way of giving back. If you can’t be a doctor, play a doctor by donating money to life-saving causes like breast cancer. I have three daughters, and this gives me a sense that I am doing something to help them, and the female population as a whole.
