Primary Stroke Center AwardBackus Hospital is designated as a Primary Stroke center by the state Department of Public Health.

The designation means Backus offers rapid and comprehensive stroke care for patients, while at the same time offering stroke education to improve outcomes and limit the number of strokes.

The Stroke Center's multidisciplinary team, which includes physicians, floor nurses, nurse educators, rehabilitation specialists, pharmacists and dietitians, helps reach stroke patients early with treatment and education to improve outcomes and lesson hospitalization time.

To be a stroke center, hospitals must demonstrate they have the necessary infrastructure, staffing and services to stabilize and treat most stroke patients.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Connecticut and the number one cause of adult disability. One in four strokes occur in patients less than 65.
