June 3, 2008 - Renowned psychiatrist and best-selling author Scott Haltzman, MD, will make a return speaking engagement at Backus Hospital on Thursday, June 26, from 3-4:30 p.m. in conference room 3.

Part of the monthly Psychiatric Department lecture series, Dr. Haltzman will speak about his latest book, “The Secrets of Happily Married Women: How to Get More Out of Your Relationship by Doing Less.”

The program is free and no registration is required.

In his book, Dr. Haltzman reveals that for years women have been working too hard on “fixing” their marriages. He shares with women how to recognize and take advantage of men’s powerful, hard-wired desire to please them. He says once women understand this core male instinct, they can actually start getting more out of their relationship by doing less.

Dr. Haltzman’s talk is comprised of lessons learned from 20 years of clinical practice, and thousands of women’s participation in his Internet community, Happilymarriedwomen.com.

Some of the secrets Dr. Haltzman reveals include:

  • Learn how to communicate about the connection you seek. It’s as simple as asking for what you want.
  • Your house doesn’t have to look like the Barbie Dream House.
  • Nurture your husband’s strengths and don’t try to change what you can’t.
  • Speak in shorter sentences, don’t skip from subject to subject, and pause frequently.
  • Take time for your own exercise, spiritual, and intellectual needs.

Two years ago, Dr. Haltzman presented on “The Secrets of Happily Married Men: Eight Ways to Win Your Wife’s Heart Forever” to a crowd-filled room of both men and women.

Dr. Haltzman is a clinical assistant professor psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University and medical director of Northern Rhode Island Community Services. He also maintains a private practice focusing on marriage counseling for individuals and couples, and is a frequent guest in many media outlets, including the Today Show, New York Times, Glamour and Cosmopolitan.
