In order to improve access to emergency services for residents of northern New London and southern Windham counties, Backus is building a stand alone satellite Emergency Department on Route 12 in Plainfield.

The 13,000-square-foot-facility, just south of exit 88 near Lathrop Road, will provide 24-7 emergency services to residents who currently have to travel long distances for emergency care. It is expected in the summer of 2012.

It will include 12 treatment rooms, a waiting area, triage area, convenient care, laboratory services and radiology services. The facility will be staffed by board-certified emergency physicians, nurses, laboratory and radiology technologists and others.

Another reason Backus proposed the facility is because of steadily increasing patient visits to its main emergency department, many of which are from the Plainfield area. In the past decade, visits to the Backus ER have gone from less than 43,000 to more than 65,000 per year.
