Grains are a great source of complex carbohydrates, fiber, B vitamins, iron, magnesium and selenium. The Food Guide Pyramid encourages the use of whole grains over refined grains to get the maximum nutrition out of what we eat. Look for whole grain breads, crackers and cereals (with the words "whole wheat", "oat", "rye", "multigrain", cracked wheat" and "millet" as the first ingredient on the ingredient list). Try whole wheat pastas, wild and brown rice or perhaps a new grain such as barley, quinoa, grits, kasha, couscous, polenta, bulgur, or buckwheat for added nutrients and fiber.
