Learn The Signs Of Teen Drug Use

NORWICH –“Designer” drugs get the headlines nationally. But traditional street drugs like heroin, cocaine and crack are having more of an impact on the lives of teens in eastern Connecticut, experts say.

Parents can learn more about signs of teen drug use at a March 8 forum, from 6:30-8 p.m. in The William W. Backus Hospital’s entry level conference rooms.

“You often hear people say if they had known what to look for, maybe they could have prevented it,” said nurse Lisa Cook, a clinical educator at Backus. “I think this information is vital to the public.”

Presenters at the event, called “Not MY Child – What Every Parent Needs to Know About Drugs,” will include Robert Sidman, MD, Chief of Emergency Services at Backus, a Drug Enforcement Agency agent, Norwich Police Department narcotics officers and an officer who specializes in gang activity.

“When we originally discussed this, we talked with the police about whether we should talk about designer drugs, but they said what they are seeing is cocaine, heroin and crack, so that is what they will cover,” Ms. Cook said. “They will talk about what parents should look for that could indicate their kids are taking drugs, what they see in our area and how it is affecting the community.”

The program is free and open to the public, but registration is requested by calling 823-6313.
