Survivors show off spirit

This fall, 26 amazing cancer survivors will take the stage in a powerful display of hope and inspiration.
Then, they’ll take your breath away.
With 175 years of cancer survivorship between them, the 26 local women will serve as models in the Survivors in Fashion Show, to be held Oct. 18 from 7-9 p.m. at 1,350 --seat Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling the Backus Foundation at 823-6331, or online by clicking here. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.
All proceeds will benefit the Breast Cancer Survivors Fund at The William W. Backus Hospital.
The group is made up of women from their mid-30s to 70s, all of whom have overcome at least one cancer diagnosis at some point in their lives. They share two other similarities: an unwavering commitment to not let cancer stop them from enjoying life, and a collective energy and passion that can bowl you right over if you aren’t prepared. After being diagnosed, some have gone on to get married; others have had children; and still others have pursued lifelong dreams such as traveling or mountain climbing.
“All of these women are great role models who have overcome enormous obstacles to be where they are today,” said Genevieve Schies, Director of Planned Giving for the Backus Foundation. “Just being in the same room with them can give you goose bumps. On behalf of our patients, I want to thank them for organizing this magnificent event, and choosing Backus as their partner.”
