Have fun learning about summer safety
Learning how to stay safe can be fun at The William W. Backus Hospital’s annual Safety Camp on Saturday, May 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Whether kids are crawling through the fire safety trailer or checking out fire trucks and ambulances, they can learn about injury prevention and what to do in an emergency through interactive activities geared towards children of all ages, from toddlers to teens.
Highlights of the free event include:
- Free Bicycle helmets are fitted and given to children, along with bicycle safety tips.
- SAFE Kids New London County has 911 training and information about booster seat and poison safety.
- The U.S. Naval Submarine Base will bring a smoke house to learn about fire safety.
- Information about D.A.R.E., pedestrian safety, fire safety and boat and water safety.
- Booths featuring sun and sports safety information and activities.
- The State Police Convincer, which demonstrates the importance of seatbelt safety.
- American Ambulance and several fire departments will showcase their equipment.
- Giveaways and free raffles.
- Face painting, free food and refreshments.
- A Wheel of Safety.
- Rain date is May 12.
This is the third year Backus Hospital has hosted Safety Camp, which coincides with Trauma Awareness Month, Emergency Services Awareness Week, Safe Kids Week and National Hospital Week.
Nurse Gillian Mosier, Backus Hospital’s Trauma Program Manager, said the event is very timely.
“With the warm weather coming up, we are focusing on summertime activities with an interactive approach to injury prevention,” Ms. Mosier said.
