Backus offers the arts to help people heal

NORWICH – “Healing from the Inside Out,” an Expressive Art Series offered by The William W. Backus Hospital Center for Healthcare Integration, begins May 10.

Artists and teachers will provide various workshops in writing, art, and music. Whether you are in a time of transition in your life, experiencing health or emotional challenges, want to grow more fully, or are interested in the impact of you intuitive ability to support your health and wholeness, the use of art can be a powerful tool for healing. No art experience is necessary.

The series will be offered Thursdays, May 10 through June 28, from 6-8 p.m. at the Backus Outpatient Care Center on Salem Turnpike in Norwich. There is a $20 per class or $150. for the eight week series fee for this program and registration is required. Call 889-8331, ext. 2483 for more information.  The sessions are:

  • May 10, Mask Making as Metaphor with Melissa Dearborn, who is certified in Expressive Arts from Salve Regina College. 
  • May 17, Finding Peace through Poetry with Elaine Brooks, RN and Registered Poetry Therapist.
  • May 24, Explorations in Hand Building with Clay with Lindsay Meiklem, who has more than 10 years of experience working with clay, opening her own teaching studio in 2002. 
  • May 31, Collage:  Putting the Pieces Together with Louise Lumen, a working Art Therapist with an MFA in Painting and an MA in Art Therapy. 
  • June 7, Self Healing Through Mandala with Jeanne Zuzel, Certified Healing Touch Practitioner and Instructor, Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, and Registered Nurse. 

June 14, The Power of Words: Writing from the Soul with Jude Rittenhouse, award-winning poet and short story writer.
