Backus Hospital Cancer Survivors Day
Backus Hospital patients who are cancer survivors, and their families, are welcome to attend this celebratory event and luncheon. The featured speaker is David Bailey, a nationally known musician and cancer survivor. Includes cancer-related booths, door prizes, pet therapy and more.

Community Coalition for Children
Join author Glenn Singleton for "Beyond Diversity-Let's Get Real!," on Monday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Garde Arts Center in New London. Mr. Singleton is the co-author of "Courageous Conversations About Race: A Field Guide for Achieving Equity in Schools."
Also, on Oct. 23, Mr. Singleton will deliver the opening address at an Intergenerational Workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Crozier-Williams Center at Connecticut College.
These free programs are open to the public, including parents, grandparents, students, teachers, counselors, social service agencies, coaches and religious groups. Childcare registration is required and available by calling 701-5150.

Continuing Yoga
Classes incorporate postures and stretches that relax, strengthen and energize. Yoga meditation is included each week. Previous yoga experience is requested. Basics will not be emphasized. Instructor: Carol Klammer.

Free Community Prostate Cancer Screening
A free prostate cancer screening. Urologists Frank Friedman, MD, and Richard Colman, MD, are volunteering their time for this vital screening. A digital rectal exam will be performed and a blood test (PSA) will be drawn. Participants will need to call the doctor that performs their exam to find out their PSA result one week following the screening. Educational materials will be available.

Gentle Yoga
Classes focus on very gentle movement, stretching, breathing and relaxation. They are designed to support and enhance recovery from cancer, chemotherapy, radiation, and many other medical conditions. Postures can be done seated and standing often with the support of chairs. Accommodations will be made to meet individual needs. Instructor: Carol Klammer.

Meditation for everyone
Meditation can help you deal with stress and pain and can be part of treatment for conditions including hypertension and heart disease. Come quiet your mind and body, release the stress of your day and enter stillness, clarity, and peace. Instructor: Marie Perez.

Humanizing Manhood; an Evening for Men with Paul Dunion
Explore the cultural definitions of manhood and how they diminish our humanity. We will look at ways to support and strengthen our development as men and liberate ourselves from destructive male legacies. Program will empower men to be better partners, fathers and friends. Paul Dunion, EdD, is the founder of Boys to Men, a mentoring community for teenage boys, and Comega, a CT gathering of men. He has been in private practice as a counselor for 25 years with a primary focus in the area of men's issues, and has written two books: Temptation in the House of the Lord and Shadow Marriage, a Descent into Intimacy.

Lighten Up! Win At Losing
A dynamic six-week course designed to help you achieve a healthy relationship with food and exercise through hypnotic relaxation. Discover the foods which satisfy and nourish you best and learn a delightful, quick form of self-hypnosis. All participants receive two hypnosis CDs. Look Good....Feel Better
A monthly program offered by the American Cancer Society to help current cancer patients look their best throughout chemotherapy or radiation therapy treatment. For schedule, call 887-2547, press 3. Program free but registration required.

Mammograms and Pap Smear Screenings
This program is free to women with no health insurance or whose insurance does cover these services. Mammograms are provided through Backus Hospital and their satellite mammography sites. Pap smears and clinical breast exams are offered through a selection of Backus affiliated physician groups or clinics. This is an ongoing program but eligibility determination and registration is required. "Medicine, Miracles and the Art of Healing" with Dr. Bernie Siegel (read more)
Dr. Bernie Siegel, one of the foremost physicians, authors, motivational speakers and advocates for individuals facing the challenges of all chronic illnesses, encourages us to take an active role in our own healing process and to find joy and inspiration in everyday life. His best-selling books and his talks are motivational, inspirational and down-to-earth, mixing compassion and humor.

Prepare for Surgery-Heal Faster
Using Guided Imagery and relaxation helps people feel calmer before surgery, have less pain after surgery and recover more quickly. The techniques are also helpful for many other procedures to help lessen anxiety. The patient will receive a book and CD or tape and take one 90 minute instructional class. Ideally the class is taken 1-3 weeks prior to surgery. Classes are offered each Monday and Wednesday.

Nurturing Your Newborn — An Infant Care Class
This 2 hour class teaches about normal newborn behavior, tests and procedures in the hospital, and how to care for your baby in the first few days at home. Topics include: safe sleep, swaddling, bath demonstration, feeding, newborn appearance and behaviors and when to call the doctor.
