Backus Hospital has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.
Backus is one of four centers in the state to receive this designation and the only one in eastern Connecticut.
The ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in all of the college's voluntary, breast-imaging accreditation programs, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program. The breast imaging services at Backus are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy.
Evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that the Backus Diagnostic Imaging Department has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.
Julius Kocsondy, Director of the Diagnostic Imaging Department at Backus, said the award recognizes that Backus offers four different breast imaging services, to offer patients a range of testing options. Backus is in the process of acquiring digital mammography machines for all facilities.
"This designation acknowledges that we have the latest technology and an expertly trained staff here at Backus Hospital," Kocsondy said. "Our staff deserves a tremendous amount of credit for this achievement."
The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs for focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology, as well as the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
