Where there's a will, there's a way—to give
Micheal & Donna Palumbo |
Backus Legacy SocietyThe Backus Legacy Society was established to recognize individuals who have made a provision in their will, trust, or other planned giving instrument to leave a gift to the Backus Foundation. These well-planned gifts help Backus Hospital to continue its mission of improving the health of our community. As you plan for your future today, we ask you to consider including the Backus Foundation in your estate plans and become a member of the Backus Legacy Society. Regardless of the size of your bequest, a planned gift is your legacy to the William W. Backus Hospital and to your community. |
You don't have to be a millionaire to make a difference.
Just ask Donna Palumbo and her husband, Michael. "We're hard-working people who feel we should give back to the community."
The couple has a provision in their will for a portion of their estate to be left to the Backus Foundation. "We've taken a proactive role in planning our legacy to ensure we will be remembered by the charities closest to our hearts," Miss Palumbo said.
Donna and Michael feel one of the greatest things a person can do in his or her lifetime is to have a positive impact on the future of others.
The Palumbos are especially happy to share their story during June, which is Leave a Legacy Month, a national public awareness effort to encourage individuals to support their community's non-profit organizations through their wills or estate plans.
"A will is a powerful thing," said Gen Schies, Director of Planned Giving for Backus Foundation. "Through it, you have the power to shape your community's future."
"Making a contribution to charity through your will is not difficult," said Attorney P. Michael Lahan. Simply contact your lawyer for direction. It's easy, and, for many people, a very meaningful way to both be remembered and help support their community."
Mrs. Palumbo worked at Backus Hospital for 16 years. She now works for Eastern Connecticut Hematology and Oncology (ECHO) as a patient account representative.
"I was blessed to have a wonderful job and career at Backus, and that experience now allows me to be able to help cancer patients with their insurance and billing concerns at ECHO," she said. Mrs. Palumbo is a 10-year breast cancer survivor, who was treated at Backus.
She also gives of her time and talents. She is known for knitting pink boas for cancer survivors.
"I gave away 50 last year. You can see the joy it brings to people on their faces," Ms. Palumbo said. "I think it is important to give back, in any way you can."
