Arm

Region fares better than average in some areas

There are plenty of dark clouds swirling around the newly released Community Health Needs Assessment. But there are some bright spots.

Here are some examples of where New London County fared better than the rest of the state and the nation:

  • Higher percentage of people who had their cholesterol checked in the past year.
  • Lower percentage of people with high cholesterol.
  • Lower percentage of patients diagnosed with arthritis.
  • Although Norwich and New London have high levels of obesity, overall New London County rates are lower.
  • Seat belt usage is nearly 89%.
  • Lower percentages of high school dropouts and unemployed.
  • Access to healthcare is generally better than average, although it varies by region.
  • Groton and rural town populations are generally healthier than Norwich, New London and mill towns.
  • Cardiovascular health is generally above average, but varies by region.
  • Cancer incidence and mortality rates compare favorably with the state.
  • Reproductive health status of women is generally good.
