Having a baby can change families in ways they aren't always prepared for. To help parents learn more about realistic expectations and positive parenting techniques, the Nurturing Program for Prenatal Families will be offered at Backus.
The Backus Birthing Center and Madonna Place collaborated to present the free 10-week program, which starts May 17.
Maureen Loughrey, APRN, clinical director of the Birthing Center, said the classes could be a great resource for expectant parents.
"The classes will focus on how having a baby will change family dynamics, what they can expect and how to better adapt to those changes," Ms. Loughrey said. "We are also anticipating that this class will encourage positive parenting skills by providing information and resources to parents and families in our community."
Ali Coley, Family Assessment Worker with the Nurturing Families Network, a partnership of Madonna Place and Backus, will be facilitating the program, which will include some speakers as well.
"We want to reach out to parents early and teach them about bonding with their children," Ms. Coley said. "The key is providing information ahead of time so they can decide on healthy strategies for parenting."
The Nurturing Families Network is a statewide resource for parents, with the mission of fostering strong bonds and healthy relationships between parents and their children. Based on Stephen Bavolek's Nurturing Parenting Programs, the class will touch on topics such as teaching empathy and age-appropriate discipline, addressing parenting behavior and teaching realistic expectations of children. The prenatal curriculum focuses on healthy eating habits, managing stress and anger, physical and emotional changes and nurturing touch.
The classes will be in the Backus Birthing Center's teaching room, offering families an opportunity to become familiar with the facilities that Backus has to offer. It also will serve an introduction to the other services that are available at both the hospital and in the community; including the Nurturing Connections telephone support service, as well as Nurturing Families' Home Visiting program. Both provide support to first-time parents during the pre-natal and post-partum period. The Nurturing Group is available to first-time parents and those who are already parents.
