Learning how to stay safe can be fun at Backus Hospital's annual Safety Camp in May.

Whether kids are crawling through the smoke house or checking out fire trucks and ambulances, they can learn about injury prevention and what to do in an emergency.

This is the third year Backus Hospital has hosted Safety Camp, which coincides with Trauma Awareness Month, Emergency Services Awareness Week, Safe Kids Week and National Hospital Week.

Gillian Mosier, RN, Trauma Program Manager, said the free event has information for parents and children from toddlers through teenagers.

"With the warm weather coming up, we are focusing on summertime activities with an interactive approach to injury prevention," Ms. Mosier said.

Some highlights include:

  • Bicycle helmets are fitted and given to children, along with bicycle safety tips.
  • Safe Kids New London County has 911 training and information about booster seat and poison safety.
  • The U.S. Naval Submarine Base will bring a smoke house.
