Hospitals are ‘safe havens’ for unwanted newborns

With a recent case of a newborn baby allegedly abandoned in a car in Groton, it is important that people know there is an alternative.

The Safe Havens Act, passed in 2000, is a little-known law that allows a parent to voluntarily give up custody of an infant age 30 days or younger to the nursing staff of an emergency room, including Backus Hospital, without being subject to arrest for abandonment.
