Patient's Voice

Dr. John Foley and the Backus Emergency Department staff saved my life. If it wasn't for Dr. Foley and the other Backus Hospital professionals, I would be dead. I will never forget what you did for me.My wife still has a husband and my two children still have a dad because of you.

It all began when I was transported by ambulance to the Backus Hospital Emergency Department from my parents' home in Sprague. I was suffering from intense chest pain.

Ultimately, after blacking out, regaining consciousness and learning that I had been defibrillated twice, it was determined that I had suffered a heart attack. Following stabilization, I was taken by LIFE STAR helicopter to Hartford Hospital where I received additional treatment and remained hospitalized for several days.

Despite my medical maladies, I am happy to report that I have fully recovered, lost 40 pounds, returned to work as a Hartford Police Department Captain and run six or so miles daily.

Although I cannot recall the names of some of the nurses present in the ER that day, I remember the faces... I also remember their calming, reassuring voices. Not to sound overly corny, but, although I have never been to heaven, on that day in the Backus Hospital ER I saw a bunch of angels.

Although there is nothing I can say or do to adequately express my gratitude to you for what you did for me, I am profoundly grateful to Dr. Foley, the ER team and Backus Hospital.
