A steady focus on patient safety and best practices has resulted in another banner year for clinical quality at Backus Hospital, according to state and national statistics.

Obviously, in the end, it's not about the scores. It's about putting the patient first, all the time.

But national recognition, based on publicly reported healthcare data that hospitals submit to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, is impressive. Here is a sampling of the recognition Backus received in the past year:

  • In October,CareScience, a national healthcare quality data company, named Backus among the best nationwide for its quality of heart attack care.
  • In September, a Gannett News Service analysis of all hospitals nationwide showed Backus was tied for first in the state for providing the recommended care to heart attack patients, and was among the top 20 percent in the nation for heart attack and heart failure care.
  • In March, a State Department of Public Health report showed that Backus ranked at or above the state average in every healthcare category in which it was measured, including heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia care.
  • For the third time in two years, Backus was named among the top hospitals nationwide for clinical excellence. Total Benchmark Solution ranked Backus 36th in the nation, the second time the hospital achieved Top 100 status, and another healthcare quality company ranked it among the top 5 percent.
