Cancer survivors to take stage as models
The William W. Backus Hospital is selling tickets and seeking sponsors for its 2011 Survivors in Fashion show, to be held Oct. 20 from 7-9 p.m. at the Fox Theatre. Approximately 20 cancer survivors will take part in the fashion show, which in addition to being a fundraiser shows that there is hope after being diagnosed with breast cancer. This year's theme is "We are a Family."

Donation links patients to community doctors
The Edward and Mary Lord Foundation has pledged $100,000 toward MyHealthDirect, an innovative tool at Backus Hospital that links patients who lack a primary care physician with appropriate healthcare providers. This provides more timely and ongoing care for patients, and reduces visits to the emergency room.

A Gift from the Heart During Philanthropy Day at Backus March 22, special recognition was given to Fred and Erin Martinelli, whose donation of a Vital Stim machine to help patients learn to swallow was made after Erin had a stroke nine years ago and needed extensive speech and swallowing therapy.
