Cancer survivors to take stage as models
The William W. Backus Hospital is selling tickets and seeking sponsors for its 2011 Survivors in Fashion show, to be held Oct. 20 from 7-9 p.m. at the Fox Theatre. Approximately 20 cancer survivors will take part in the fashion show, which in addition to being a fundraiser shows that there is hope after being diagnosed with breast cancer. This year's theme is "We are a Family."

Donation links patients to community doctors
The Edward and Mary Lord Foundation has pledged $100,000 toward MyHealthDirect, an innovative tool at Backus Hospital that links patients who lack a primary care physician with appropriate healthcare providers. This provides more timely and ongoing care for patients, and reduces visits to the emergency room.

29th Annual Backus Golf Tournament
Two hundred and sixteen golfers took to the course Thursday, June 10, for the 29th Annual Backus Golf Tournament at Elmridge Golf Course in Pawcatuck, CT. This year's event was expected to raise more than $40,000 in support of the many community health programs that Backus provides.
Ice Angel wine tasting event to benefit Backus Stroke Center
In February, 2010 an Ice Angel Wine Tasting and Backus Hospital Stroke Center fundraiser took place at the Dalice Elizabeth Winery, 6 Amos Road in Preston. View Photo Gallery
The event highlighted the dedication of the new Ice Angel brand of wine, and tastings featured Ice Angel white, special blend reds and a gourmet demonstration from Executive Chef Guy Mitchell. Proceeds from the event went to support the Backus stroke program.
In October 2009, Backus was designated as Primary Stroke Center, meaning the hospital had proven to offer rapid and comprehensive stroke care for patients, while at the same time provided stroke education to improve outcomes and limit the number of strokes.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Connecticut and a major cause of disability.

Breast cancer survivors hit the runway during the Survivors in Fashion Show held Oct. 15 at Foxwoods Resort Casino. All proceeds raised benefit the Backus Breast Cancer Survivors Fund. Watch these inspiring survivors show off the latest fashions with this audio slideshow.
The Survivors in Fashion Committee is a group of breast cancer survivors whose mission is giving hope and vision after diagnosis.
100% of the funds raised will be used for the benefit of breast cancer patients in our local community.
