One in 3 children in the United States faces a future with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association wants to change that.
That's why the association hosts "Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes" - to provide education programs in the community, advocate for people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure.
In 2008, more than 100,000 walkers in more than 180 cities around the country participated. This year's local event will be Sept. 20 at Harkness Memorial Park in Waterford.
Joan Sommers, a dietitian at the Backus Diabetes Management Center, said the walk is a great way for people to come together.
"A lot of people know someone with diabetes or have a family member with the disease," she said.
Stephen Phelan, MD, an endocrinologist at the Backus Diabetes Management Center, said the money raised by the association is used for research, education and awareness. The association also acts as a political advocate for people with diabetes.
"I like this event a lot, because the walk promotes a healthy lifestyle while raising awareness and funding at the same time," Dr. Phelan said. "And it is at a beautiful location, at Harkness."
Beth Robinson, Associate Manager for American Diabetes Association, New London County, said last year the walk raised about $55,000 with 250 walkers. The goal this year is to raise $75,000 and have 500 walkers.
The three-mile walk goes through the scenic park, but participants don't have to complete it. There are activities for children and it is a popular event with families.
