Go food shopping with a dietitian at your side

Imagine the possibilities if you were able to walk through grocery store aisles with a registered dietitian by your side.Which cereal is healthier? What exactly does this nutrition label mean? Got any healthy recipes for fish?

These are all questions you could ask. And on March 30, you can.

Dietitians from the Backus Food and Nutrition Department will conduct supermarket tours for the community at 1 and 5 p.m. to offer nutritional advice and encouragement for stepping out of your comfort zone when it comes to shopping and eating healthy.

“We did this two years ago and had a good response,” saidWhitney Bundy, Director of Backus Hospital’s Food and Nutrition Department and a registered dietitian. “People said they enjoyed it and learned a lot.”

The program will last approximately one hour to 90 minutes at the Stop & Shop in Norwichtown. It will include tips on reading labels and a discussion of healthy eating choices.

“Often labels can be misleading, so we will teach people how to read the ingredients and what they mean,” she said.

People will be split into groups, each led by a dietitian, so there will be plenty of chances to ask questions.

Dietitians also will offer ideas on how to cook with unique foods people might not otherwise be comfortable using. For example,Ms. Bundy mentioned pomegranates, which contain calcium, potassium and iron, plus compounds that can help protect against heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. The juicy red seeds can be used in salads, sauces, main dishes and more.

Participants will also receive information and materials to take home.
