Support the Breast Health Initiative

Pink Party to celebrate survivors and their supporters

You've heard of going pink. Now you can go to the Pink Party.

This celebration of survivors and recognition of the supporters of the Backus Breast Health Initiatives won't be your average black tie gala. In fact, it's not black tie, or a gala.

But it will be fun - and meaningful.

The party will be at Daniel's on the Waterfront, One American Way at Chelsea Harbor on Sept. 26. Starting a 6 p.m., it will include a luminaria lighting ceremony to honor and remember those affected by breast cancer, the sounds of smooth jazz and the flavors of the award-winning wines of Priam Vineyards of Colchester. There will be tasting stations to try different varieties, from Salmon River Red to Jeremy River White.

The party is the culmination of a year-long initiative of fundraising by the Backus Foundation toward a pledge to raise $1 million for the Backus Breast Health Initiatives. Fund-raising events throughout the year included golf tournaments, community partnerships with the Connecticut Sun, the Connecticut Defenders, the Circles of Care Campaign and other events.

Funds raised support adding the latest in digital mammography technology, improving early detection and cancer treatments as well as the new Breast Health Patient Navigator program.

Gloria Priam, who founded the vineyards with her husband, Gary Crump, in 1998, said she is happy to be able to support the cause of breast cancer research.

"I have several close relatives who have recently finished bouts of chemotherapy and radiation from breast cancer and at least two of my friends have lost their lives to breast cancer, so this hits very close to home," she said. They are working on creating a special Rosé, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Backus Foundation.

The vineyard offers 13 varieties of hand-crafted wines. It is open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and select holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. from March through December for tasting and self-guided tours of the vineyard. Guided tours also are available by reservation. Learn more about the vineyard at www.priamvineyards.com
