Meet our Laboratory Staff:
Thomas C. King, M.D., Ph.D.
Medical Director
Dr. King received his medical degree as well as a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Washington University in St. Louis. He is board certified in Anatomic Pathology and has more than 20 years of experience as a hospital based pathologist. He has previously directed clinical laboratories at Brown University affiliated hospitals (Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital), Boston Medical Center, and Roger Williams Medical Center. He is currently an Associate Professor of Pathology at Boston University School of Medicine and is the author of more than 50 peer reviewed publications.

Dr. Judson recieved her medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, D.C. She completed residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology as well as fellowship training in gynecologic pathology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. She is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
Timothy K. Shizume, DC, MT (ASCP)
Director, Laboratory Services
He graduated from the State University of New York at Stony Brook with a bachelor's degree in Medical Technology after completing his clinical training at the North Shore University Hospital/Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Lake Success, New York. He obtained his doctoral degree from New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, New York in 1987.
He was employed by Yale New Haven Hospital as the Manager of the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory from 2003 to 2005. During this time, he oversaw the completion of the Core Lab construction project and the move of the Chemistry Laboratory into the new space. He also oversaw the implementation of LC/MS/MS testing and the introduction of new Roche Modular analytics into the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory.
He was employed by the University of Massachusetts Medical Center from 2005 - 2007 as Operations Manager for the Clinical Laboratories. He supervised several lab construction projects during this time period, and was intimately involved in the development of laboratory emergency management planning for the department. He assumed the position of Administrative Director for the Laboratory at Wing Memorial Hospital (an affiliate of UMass) in early 2007, prior to coming to the William W. Backus Hospital in July, 2008.
His areas of expertise include Laboratory Quality Management, Performance Improvement, and Laboratory Administration.
Dermatopathology
Caroline Wilkel, MD
A graduate of the University of Connecticut Health and Science Center, she completed her residency in dermatology and fellowship in dermatopathology at Brown University/ Roger Williams Medical Center. Dr. Wilkel is board-certified in dermatology and dermatopathology and is the Director of the Roger Williams/Boston University Dermatopathology Fellowship Program, accredited by the ACGME.
Catherine Breen, MD, MPH
A graduate of Emory University and Duke University School of Medicine, she completed her residency at Brown University and her fellowship at Roger Williams/Boston University. Dr. Breen is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and her area of specialty is in dermatopathology and surgical pathology. She is board certified in Dermatopathology.
Todd Vinorvski
A graduate of Drexel University College of Medicine, also completed his residency at Drexel University College of Medicine and fellowship at Roger Williams Medical Center. Dr. Vinovrski is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and Dermatopathology.
Erin A. O'Leary, MD
A graduate of Albany Medical College, she completed her residency at Albany Medical Center Hospital and her fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine at the Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. Dr. O'Leary is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and dermatopathology.
Gastrointestinal Pathology
Mirela Stancu, MD
A graduate of Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Romania, she completed her residency at Brown University and fellowships at Boston University, Harvard University and MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute. Dr. Stancu is board- certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and her area of specialty includes G.I. pathology in which she is specialty trained.
Cytopathology
Sumita Gokhale, MD
A graduate of Motilal Nehru College of Allahabad in India, she completed her residency at the University of Texas, Galveston, and fellowships at MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute, and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gokale is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology as well as cytopathology.
Hematopathology
Jila Khorsand, MD
A graduate of Tehran University, Tehran, Iran, she completed her residency at the University of Connecticut and fellowships at MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute. Dr. Khorsand is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology. She currently serves as Pathologist-in-Chief at Westerly Hospital in Westerly, RI.
