Heart-healthy nutrition, daily physical activity and eliminating tobacco are all part of reducing your risk for heart disease, heart attack and stroke.

By participating in the American Heart Association Annual Heart Walk, people can get their daily physical activity while also raising awareness and money for research. The heart walk will be Oct. 18 at Rocky Neck State Park in Niantic.

In addition to the walk, the event includes a health fair, free screenings from the Backus Mobile Health Resource Center, free lunch and entertainment.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the 5-kilometer walk starts at 10 a.m. To sign up to walk on the Backus Hospital team, call Shawn Mawhiney, Director of Communications at Backus, at 889-8331, ext. 2312 or e-mail him at smawhiney@wwbh.org

"Improving the health of the community is part of Backus Hospital's mission, and we are proud to collaborate with the American Heart Association to fight heart disease," Mr. Mawhiney said. "This is not just another walk - it's about having fun, being healthy and finding a cure for heart disease, which impacts so many people."

Shaun Raymond, senior regional director of communications for the Connecticut office of the American Heart Association, said this year the goal is to raise $350,000, with 2,400 walkers. Last year $320,000 was raised through pledges and donations.

According to the American Heart Association, more than 864,000 American lives are claimed by heart disease and stroke, the nation's No. 1 and No. 3 killers.
