Adding the latest technology is part of Backus Hospital’s overall Breast Health Initiative. A major example of this ongoing commitment to female patients is digital mammography.

Plans for the conversion to all-digital mammography at Backus Hospital continue on schedule. The technology will soon be available on the main hospital campus and its imaging centers in Norwichtown, Groton and Colchester.

The devices, expected to be operational this spring, were funded by the Backus Foundation, Inc.

Gail Weingast, MD, Mammography Section Chief at Backus Hospital, said digital mammography is more convenient and efficient for patients, and some studies show digital images are more precise and accurate compared to film.

Another advantage of digital mammography is the ease of access to the digital records, which can be more easily manipulated and stored by radiologists compared to film.

Backus, which performs approximately 15,000 mammograms per year, has been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.
