A urologist on the Backus Hospital Medical Staff is the only physician in New London and Windham counties to be listed as a robotics surgeon on the website of the company that owns the da Vinci surgical robot.
T. Casey McCullough, DO, a board-certified urologist on the Backus Medical Staff with special training in robotics, is one of only 17 Connecticut physicians listed on the patient and physician resources section of the http://www.intuitivesurgical.com web site.
To appear, a surgeon must successfully complete at least 20 surgeries using the da Vinci robot. Dr. McCullough has performed the 20 required surgeries at Backus, including prostate, bladder removal, kidney and other procedures. The website listing includes his contact information and a link to the Backus robotics microsite, www.backushospital.org/davinci.
Specially trained surgeons use the da Vinci robot to perform minimally invasive procedures, which result in shorter recovery times for patients.
At Backus, surgeons have performed prostate, hysterectomy, kidney, bladder and thoracic procedures. The list of Backus surgeons using the robot is expected to grow in the coming months.
