Backus spreads word on surgical options

A piano instructor had hand surgery and is able to play again.
A public utilities mechanic, who performs a highly physical job, underwent hip replacement and is back on the job, feeling stronger than ever.
These are just two real-life stories of surgical excellence at Backus Hospital - part of an all-new marketing campaign that includes print advertising and a multi-media "Surgery at Backus" website.
Ads will be published in daily and weekly newspapers throughout the region. The ads, with the headline "Behind great outcomes are great surgeons," feature patient testimonials and photos of Backus surgeons in action. The campaign will also include web site ads, billboards and radio.
But the print ads serve only as lead-ins to the main component that sets this campaign apart: the robust micro-website, www.backushospital.org/surgery.
The patients above, and others - a mom who had breast reconstruction surgery following cancer - share their compelling stories in brief video presentations on the web. They thank Backus surgeons and staff for the great outcomes that helped them return to normal daily activities.
"He gave me my life back," says Norwich keyboard instructor Deborah Lyon of Norwich of hand surgeon Tarik Kardestuncer, MD. On the video, she effortlessly plays from a Mozart sonata.
In addition to the patient testimonial videos, the website, produced entirely in-house by the Backus Communications Department, includes videos about minimally invasive surgery options, robotic surgery and education classes for adults and children.
Other highlights include an audio slideshow about Backus Hospital's high definition operating room and a listing of Backus surgeons and procedures. Links include Backus Physician Services and the da Vinci robot for hysterectomy and prostate procedures.
"Backus has a wide array of surgical expertise to offer, and this multimedia presentation will help highlight its already superb reputation in our community," said David Kalla, MD, Chairman of Surgical Services at Backus. "If you watch the videos of patients who passionately praise their Backus experiences, you know we are the place to turn for surgery."
Throughout the year, Backus will launch similar marketing campaigns centered around additional medical services.
