Backus physician group adds new plastic surgery options

Backus Physician Services now offers breast reconstruction and other plastic surgery procedures, along with thoracic and general surgeries.
Deanna Drake, practice manager at Backus Physician Services, said the group recently added Vinod Pathy,MD, to the practice.
Dr. Pathy is a general surgeon who specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery, including breast reconstruction for cancer patients. He also offers scar reduction procedures, which can include laser therapy.
"Backus Physician Services is growing to meet the needs of the community,"Ms. Drake said. "This allows us to introduce more specialties into the practice."
Backus Physician Services offers a wide range of minimally invasive surgeries for patients. The office is at 12 Case Street, Suite 313, in Norwich. Dr. Pathy practices in the Backus Medical Office Building at 330 Washington Street in Norwich.
Four other surgeons practice with Backus Physician Services-Sergio Casillas, MD, specializing in colon and rectal surgery as well as general surgery;Michael Deren, MD, specializing in thoracic surgery; Juan Escalon, MD, specializing in thoracic surgery; and Mark Tousignant,MD, specializing in general surgery. All of them have expertise in the latest, minimally invasive surgical techniques. Dr. Escalon and Dr. Tousignant are both trained to use the da Vinci robotic surgical system as well.
Dr. Casillas, a member of the BackusMedical Staff since 2004, is board-certified in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery. He has been named one of the Top Doctors in the state by ConnecticutMagazine.
Dr. Deren is board-certified in general and thoracic surgery as well as quality assurance. He has been active in organized medicine locally as President of the New London County Medical Society. He is Past President of the Connecticut StateMedical Society (CSMS) and is currently Chairman of its Board of Trustees.
Dr. Escalon specializes in all facets of thoracic surgery, including lung, mediastinal, chest wall and esophageal operations, as well as pacemakers. He is board-certified in surgery and board-eligible in thoracic surgery.
Dr. Tousignant is board-certified in general surgery and trained in advanced laparoscopic procedures, including head, neck and parathyroid operations.
