Backus joins national prostate cancer campaign

Backus is part of a national public awareness campaign, “Know Your Stats About Prostate Cancer,” to promote the American Urological Association prostate cancer screening guidelines.

The AUA Foundation and the National Football League joined forces to launch this campaign in 2009, encouraging all men age 40 and older to get a baseline PSA test and talk with their doctors about their pros- tate health. Pro football Hall-of-Famer Mike Haynes, a prostate cancer survivor, is the spokesman.

Mr. Haynes, a first-round draft choice of the New England Patriots in 1976, is a daVinci prostatectomy patient and prostate cancer survivor. He had a 14-year NFL career with the Patriots and the Los Angeles Raiders. In August 2008, Mr. Haynes went to a screening event held by the AUA Foundation, which led to the discovery that he had prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer affecting men is the United States, but it is most treatable when caught early. Establishing a baseline prostate-specific antigen (PSA) score at age 40 can help doctors better interpret your future PSA scores.
