The William W. Backus Hospital's health centers in Colchester, Montville and Gales Ferry are offering flu shots to the public.
Call ahead of time to ensure that there is adequate supply. The Colchester number is 537-4601, Gales Ferry is 464-3100 and Montville is 848-1298.
People at high risk for the flu include children, adults with underlying medical conditions and pregnant women.
Dr. Timothy Sullivan, a pediatrician on the Backus Medical Staff, and Dr. Setu Vora, a pulmonologist on the Backus Medical Staff, urge people to get their seasonal flu shots now so that they will be prepared when the H1N1 (swine flu) vaccinations become available in October. They offer these tips to avoid the flu:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home if you are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Wash your hands often
- Get flu shots.
