Backus event promotes summer safety
Children and parents can learn more about safety through games and activities at Backus Hospital’s popular Safety Camp in May. It comes just in time, because before you know it, school will be out and children will be on the go.
Gillian Mosier, RN, Trauma Program Manager at Backus Hospital, said children will be able to check out fire trucks, see the LIFE STAR helicopter, and meet Cutter the Defender Eagle, mascot of the Connecticut Defenders.
There will be safety games and free giveaways.
"Due to the popularity and demand, we have increased the number of free bicycle helmets and different sizes will be available for all ages," Ms. Mosier said.
Kids can learn about bike safety, summer sports safety, and sun safety. The Uncas Health District will sponsor a booth about sun safety as part of a grant from the state Department of Public Health to provide skin cancer prevention and education.
"We plan to have a mannequin where kids can see what types of hats and sunglasses provide sun protection, as well as where and how to apply sunscreen," said Terry Thackston, health educator at the Uncas Health District.
She said the Safety Camp provides lots of safety information for kids and parents.
"I learn a lot at these events myself," Ms. Thackston said.
This is the fourth year Backus has hosted the event, which last year drew more than 400 visitors, Ms. Mosier said. The event coincides with Trauma Awareness Month, and Safe Kids Week is later in the month.
Some activities include:
-
Bicycle helmets are fitted and given to children, along with bicycle safety tips.
