Backus women’s series focuses on asthma

NORWICH – November’s “Woman to Woman Health Talk” topic will be “Asthma and COPD: Control that Huffing and Puffing," presented by Dr. Donna Romito, a pulmonologist on the Backus Medical Staff.

It will be held Thursday, Nov. 8, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Backus Hospital entry level conference rooms.

Asthma afflicts approximately 17 million Americans, according to the American Lung Association, and local studies show the problem is particularly acute in parts of eastern Connecticut. The chronic disease affects people’s airways, which are the tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to the lung diseases emphysema and chronic bronchitis in which the lungs are damaged, making it hard to breathe. It is the fourth leading cause of death in America, claiming the lives of 122,283 Americans in 2003, according to the American Lung Association.

Cigarette smoking is the most common cause, but it can also result from exposure to asbestos and other pollutants.

The Backus Nursing and Community Health Education Department is offering the monthly educational events, which feature female Backus clinicians speaking about health issues of interest to women. They are held the second Thursday of each month.

The program is free but registration is required by calling 823-6313. Refreshments are provided.
