Scot HANEYScot Haney to speak at Cancer Survivors Day

Scot Haney,WFSB Channel 3 meteorologist and co-host of "Better Connecticut," will be the featured speaker at this year's Cancer Survivors Day at Backus.

"Events like this are a great way to thank the medical profession as well as celebrate being a cancer survivor,"Mr. Haney said.

His mother has been a breast cancer survivor for more than 20 years.

"Cancer affects everyone, if not directly, then you are related to someone or know someone with cancer. I will talk about her battle and how humor can help get you through the tough times," he said.

"Cancer Survivors Day is a nice way for everyone to come together and celebrate," said Donna Palumbo, a breast cancer survivor. "You get to meet each others' families, as well as catch up with doctors and nurses."

Mrs. Palumbo works at Eastern Connecticut Hematology and Oncology Associates, so she has met many patients through the office as well.

"The picnic atmosphere brings together many cancer survivors and their loved ones to reaffirm that you can beat cancer. It is a great event to see people in the same journey of survivorship," said John Panicek, Administrative Director of Cancer Services at Backus Hospital. "The staff involved equally enjoys putting on the event, sharing time with former patients. It is one of the largest and most meaningful celebrations of life that the hospital hosts each year."

The event will be Oct. 3 at the Backus Hospital campus, starting at 11 a.m. There will be a luncheon, entertainment, information booths, vendors, children's activities and more.

The Center for Healthcare Integration (CHI) offers complementary Reiki and Healing Touch for attendees as well.
