"Celebrate and Educate" Multicultural Health Fair

Learn about the many unique customs and cultural preferences relevant to healthcare. Several cultures will be represented. Handouts for healthcare providers will be available for each culture containing information on birth customs, gender issues, communication and respect styles, and end-of-life issues. The event will also include ethnic food samples, recipes and musical samplings.

Beginning and Continuing Yoga with Michele Flowers

Classes incorporate stretching,movement, and attention to the breath to relax the body, improve flexibility, calm themind and enhance inner awareness. Breast Health Patient Navigator Program

Free to women who experience a suspiciousmammogram and/or ultrasound reading. The Patient Navigator helps guide the woman fromthe suspicious reading to a definitive diagnosis in the shortest amount of time possible to facilitate more efficient access and guidance to breast health care services and information. Services include assistance with referrals to local resources and social support; assistance with appointments; educational support; and, one-on-one meetings to increase satisfaction with their breast health care experience.

Breast cancer prevention Dessert at Backus:
"Fighting the Fear: Screening and Prevention in Pre-Menopausal Women."

Presenters include introductions by radiation oncologist Dr. Meena Moran; OB-GYN Dr. MelissaWelch, who will talk about the importance of the self breast exam; a talk about different modalities in Diagnostic Imaging given by a radiologist on the Backus Medical Staff; oncologist Dr. Anca Bulgaru, who will focus on genetic screening and prevention in high-risk patients; surgeon Dr. Mark Tramontozzi, who will discuss follow-up for abnormal mammograms; Rose Zmyslinski, an advanced practice registered nurse in Psychiatric Services, who will talk about removing the fear barrier; and Kathy Turner of the American Cancer Society. A question and answer session with the panelists will follow the presentation.

Colchester '57 Fest

A free osteoporosis screening will be available at the festival, on the Backus Mobile Health Resource Center van, conducted by a tech fromthe Backus Hospital Diagnostic Imaging Department. AWellness tent will feature a variety of screenings. Fun and educational for the whole family.

Diabetes Outpatient Self-Management Program

This programincludes an initial assessment by Certified Diabetes Educators, a Registered Nurse and a Clinical Dietitian. There are four, two-hour group classes which address all of the required components of Self Management of Diabetes. The programis offered every month with day and evening sessions available. Provides individuals, families and significant others the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the components of self-caremanagement. Health care provider referral is required. Family Matters Health Talk: "Coping with the Stress of New Parenthood."

Free Community Prostate Cancer Screening

Urologists Franklin Friedman,MD, and Richard Colman, MD, are volunteering their time for this vital screening. A digital rectal exam will be performed and a blood test (PSA) will be drawn. Participants will need to call the doctor that performs their examto find out their PSA result one week following the screening. Educationalmaterials will be available.

HeartWalk

Meditation for Everyone

Meditation can help you deal with stress and pain and can be part of treatment for conditions including hypertension and heart disease. Come quiet your mind and body, release the stress of your day and enter stillness, clarity, and peace. Instructor: Marie Perez.

Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster

Using Guided Imagery and relaxation helps people feel calmer before surgery, have less pain after surgery and recover more quickly. The techniques are also helpful formany other procedures to help lessen anxiety. The patient will receive a book and CD or tape and take one 90-minute instructional class. Ideally the class is taken 1-3 weeks prior to surgery. Classes are offered each Monday and Wednesday. A friend or familymembermay accompany the patient.

Reiki Training, Level I and II

Reiki (Ray key), an energy therapy, is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. Reiki is useful for practitioners, caregivers and for self-care. Participantsmay register for Level I and /or Level II classes. Instructor: Marie Perez, Reiki Master.

Expectant Grandparent Seminar

Happiest Baby on the Block

Would you like to learn how to calm your new baby's cries ... inminutes? Learn why your baby is crying and how to turn on the calming reflex so that your baby can be happy and sleep longer. This two-hour class includes the information you need to help your baby and a parent kit for use at home. May be taken while pregnant or in the first weeks at home.

Hypno Birthing Class

Infant-Child CPR

New Moms' Support Group

Nurturing Your Newborn - An Infant Care Class

This two-hour class teaches normal newborn behavior, tests and procedures in the hospital, and how to care for your baby in the first few days at home. Topics include: safe sleep, swaddling, bath demonstration, feeding, newborn appearance and behaviors and when to call the doctor.

Parents-to-be Open House

Informational session and a tour of the Birthing Center. Speakers include OB doctor, pediatrician, and lactation consultant. Signing Safari Parent Workshops

Learn the benefits of using American Sign Language with your hearing baby. Decrease fussiness while improving communication and have fun at the same time. This two-hour class teaches common signs that you will use with your baby or toddler. Also includes DVD and Pictionary of over 100 signs.

Relaxation and Restoration

Backus Hospital's Center for Healthcare Integration (CHI) offers Acupuncture, Healing Touch, Therapeutic Massage (Swedish, Deep Tissue, and Hot Stone Therapy), Reflexology and Reiki sessions to the community by hospital-credentialed therapists. No referral is needed.

Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic


Diagnosis and treatment ofmost sexually transmitted diseases; HIV and Hepatitis C testing is available.
