An Evening with Dr. Peter D'Adamo
For over 25 years, naturopathic physician, Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo has extensively researched the connections between blood type, food, and disease. Combining his findings with previously established research by other scientists in his field, D'Adamo published his first book, "Eat Right 4 Your Type," in 1996. The book became a New York Times bestseller and brought worldwide recognition to D'Adamo's blood type theories and the importance of dietary individuality. The evening will include a question and answer period and book signing. Seating is on a first come basis.

Breathe Easy: Letting Go of Smoking
Backus will be offering a new smoking cessation program combining the benefits of acupuncture, hypnosis, and stress management. Be ready for great changes and new commitments. Cancer Services Dinner
The next Cancer Services Dinner at Backus will review recent advances in the treatment of prostate cancer. Speakers include welcome and introductions by Mark Tramontozzi, MD; presentation on new surgical options with the da Vinci robot by T. Casey McCullough, MD; technological advances in radiation therapy treatment by Sheida Mani, MD, Radiation Oncologist; and Kathy Turner from the American Cancer Society.

Diabetes Outpatient Self-Management Program
This program includes an initial assessment by Certified Diabetes Educators, a Registered Nurse and a Clinical Dietitian. There are four, two-hour group classes which address all of the required components of Self Management of Diabetes. Participants are contacted three to six months after completion of the program to assess the attainment of individual objectives. The program is offered every month with day and evening sessions available. The focus of this program is to provide individuals, families and significant others the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the components of self-care management. Health Care Provider Referral is required. Family members or significant others are encouraged to attend. The cost of the program includes all of the education materials. The hospital business office will bill insurance providers. It is recommended that you contact your insurance provider to clarify the specifics of your coverage. You may contact the Diabetes Center for more information by calling 892-6906 and selecting the Patient Education Classes prompt.

I Can! Hypno-Oncology: Complementary Cancer Care
A dynamic series providing support for people challenged with cancer and the side effects of treatment. The program incorporates instruction in self-hypnosis, Emotional Freedom Technique, Guided Imagery and art as medicine, evidence-based techniques that help to reduce pain, nausea, fatigue and anxiety while supporting recovery and well-being. Instructor: Jane Percy.The series is made possible by the generous support of the Backus Foundation's Breast Cancer Survivors Fund.

Mammograms and Pap Smear Screenings
This program is free to women with no health insurance or whose insurance does not cover these services. Mammograms are provided through Backus Hospital and their satellite mammography sites. Pap smears and clinical breast exams are offered through a selection of Backus affiliated physician groups or clinics. Meditation for Everyone
Meditation can help you deal with stress and pain and can be part of treatment for conditions including hypertension and heart disease. Come quiet your mind and body, release the stress of your day and enter stillness, clarity, and peace. Instructor: Marie Perez.

Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster
Using Guided Imagery and relaxation helps people feel calmer before surgery, have less pain after surgery and recover more quickly. The techniques are also helpful for many other procedures to help lessen anxiety. The patient will receive a book and CD or tape and take one 90-minute instructional class. Ideally the class is taken 1-3 weeks prior to surgery. Classes are offered each Monday and Wednesday. A friend or family member may accompany the patient.

Expectant Grandparent Seminar

Happiest Baby on the Block
Would you like to learn how to calm your new baby's cries...in minutes? Learn why your baby is crying and how to turn on the calming reflex so that your baby can be happy and sleep longer. This two-hour class includes the information you need to help your baby and a parent kit for use at home. May be taken while pregnant or in the first weeks at home. HypnoBirthing Class

New Moms' Support Group

Nurturing Your Newborn - An Infant Care Class
This two-hour class teaches normal newborn behavior, tests and procedures in the hospital, and how to care for your baby in the first few days at home. Topics include: safe sleep, swaddling, bath demonstration, feeding, newborn appearance and behaviors and when to call the doctor.

Signing Safari Parent Workshops
Learn the benefits of using American Sign Language with your hearing baby. Decrease fussiness while improving communication and have fun at the same time. This two-hour class teaches common signs that you will use with your baby or toddler. Also includes DVD and Pictionary of over 100 signs. Held in the Backus Hospital Birthing Center.

Relaxation and Restoration
Backus Hospital's Center for Healthcare Integration (CHI) offers Acupuncture, Healing Touch, Therapeutic Massage (Swedish, Deep Tissue, and Hot Stone Therapy), Reflexology and Reiki sessions to the community by hospital-credentialed therapists. No referral is needed.

Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic
