Becky Durham, RN, Clinical Director of E-3 and Progressive Care Unit at Backus Hospital, was searching for a way to strengthen teamwork at Backus and make a difference in the community. She found a way — by building houses. She and several other Backus employees and family members spent a day last month volunteering for Habitat for Humanity's "Build-a-Thon 2007," where they installed siding on a home in New London.

Backus Hospital’s Emergency Department, the final steel beams – some of the more than 200 tons of steel used in the project – were put into place. The expansion is part of Backus Hospital’s $50-million BackusCare project, which will double the size of the Emergency Department, create more space for surgical services, completely renovate two floors for inpatients, and add a second linear accelerator with the latest treatment for radiation therapy.

Backus Hospital hosted its first Family Day on Feb. 4, 2006. It included the unveiling of the new "A Star is Born at Backus" wall of honor outside the birthing center, as well as tours of the birthing center, a mini-health fair and musical entertainment for children.

The William W. Backus Hospital recently opened a new unit for cardiology patients, part of its $50 million expansion project. On May 30, employees and physicians were given a sneak preview of the new floor, which includes 22 private rooms with the capability of transforming some of them into semi-private rooms when needed.
