Backus Hospital Safety Camp

Children and parents can learn more about summer safety through games and activities. Activities include free bike helmets, giveaways, face-painting, free food, 911 training, a smoke house, pedestrian safety, fire safety, boat and water safety and much more, including tours of LIFE STAR helicopters and fire apparatus.

Beginning and Continuing Yoga with Michele Flowers

Diabetes Outpatient Self-Management Program


This program includes an initial assessment by Certified Diabetes Educators, a Registered Nurse and a Clinical Dietitian. There are four, two-hour group classes which address all of the required components of Self Management of Diabetes. Participants are contacted three to six months after completion of the program to assess the attainment of individual objectives. The program is offered every month with day and evening sessions available. The focus of this program is to provide individuals, families and significant others the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the components of self-care management. Health Care Provider Referral is required. Family members or significant others are encouraged to attend. This service is free of charge to the community. Healing Touch Level I


Healing Touch is a relaxing, nurturing energy therapy that assists in balancing your physical, mental and emotional well-being. Healing Touch works with your energy field to support your natural ability to heal. You will learn many basic techniques to reduce stress and anxiety, decrease pain, and aid the promotion of wound healing.

Initiation into Manhood; A Workshop for Men with Paul Dunion


We can understand life as offering us challenges and opportunities that initiate us into ever deepening levels of maturity. This workshop explores the stages of initiation and what may be necessary in order to make a successful passage at each stage. The evening is an exploration of characteristics reflective of the initiated male.

Mammograms and Pap Smear Screenings


This program is free to women with no health insurance or whose insurance does not cover these services. Mammograms are provided through Backus Hospital and their satellite mammography sites. Pap smears and clinical breast exams are offered through a selection of Backus affiliated physician groups or clinics. This is an ongoing free program but eligibility determination and registration is required.

Meditation for Everyone


Meditation can help you deal with stress and pain and can be part of treatment for conditions including hypertension and heart disease. Come quiet your mind and body, release the stress of your day and enter stillness, clarity, and peace. Instructor: Marie Perez. These are the last three classes of a six week series.

Pink Fair - A Health and Wellness Fair for Women


Participate in free screenings and learn about the latest treatment options and advancements in healthcare technology. Explore homeopathic medicine, and complementary therapies, and get the latest nutrition and diet information from the Backus clinicians and dietitians. Also available - important access to care information for women and families. A special luminaria ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m., in honor of those who have battled breast cancer.

Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster


Using Guided Imagery and relaxation helps people feel calmer before surgery, have less pain after surgery and recover more quickly. The techniques are also helpful for many other procedures to help lessen anxiety. The patient will receive a book and CD or tape and take one 90-minute instructional class. Ideally the class is taken 1-3 weeks prior to surgery. Classes are offered each Monday and Wednesday. A friend or family member may accompany the patient.

Reiki: Level III Master Training


The Master Class will include the complete Usui/Tibetan Reiki system, receiving the healing and master attunements and instruction and practice in giving all attunements, introduction to two Tibetan symbols, and the advanced Reiki meditation, as well as follow-up guidance from the Reiki master. Prerequisite: Advanced Reiki Training. Instructor: Marie Perez, Reiki Master.

Tai Chi


A combination of martial arts and meditation in motion. The many health benefits include increased balance, circulation, coordination, flexibility, and mental clarity. Thin's In


This acclaimed weight reduction program will give you the tools you need to lose weight and maintain healthy eating habits. Come learn the importance of combining proper portions within the five food groups for nutritious and healthy eating. Thin's In combines balanced eating, exercise and behavior modification, which will leave you feeling satisfied and healthy. Instructor: Dianne Rubin. These are the last four classes in a ten-week series. A new series will begin in June.

Designed for the expectant or new father. Information on steps to prepare your home for your new baby. This interactive resource is meant to help you be a great dad now and in the years to come. Class will include information on the Well Child, Sick Child, Injured Child and Safe Child.

Happiest Baby on the Block


Would you like to learn how to calm your new baby's cries ... in minutes? Learn why your baby is crying and how to turn on the calming reflex so that your baby can be happy and sleep longer. HypnoBirthing Class

Nurturing Your Newborn - An Infant Care Class


This two-hour class teaches normal newborn behavior, tests and procedures in the hospital, and how to care for your baby in the first few days at home. Topics include: safe sleep, swaddling, bath demonstration, feeding, newborn appearance and behaviors and when to call the doctor.

Parents to Be Open House


Informational session and a tour of the Birthing Center. Speakers include OB doctor, midwife, Neonatal practitioner, pediatrician, lactation consultant, birth registry/paternity and various other educational materials available. Signing Safari Parent Workshops


Learn the benefits of using American Sign Language with your hearing baby. Decrease fussiness while improving communication and have fun at the same time. This two-hour class teaches common signs that you will use with your baby or toddler. Also includes DVD and Pictionary of over 100 signs.

Relaxation and Restoration


Backus Hospital's Center for Healthcare Integration (CHI) offers Acupuncture, Healing Touch, Therapeutic Massage (Swedish, Deep Tissue, and Hot Stone Therapy), Reflexology and Reiki sessions to the community by hospital-credentialed therapists. No referral is needed.

Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic


Diagnosis and treatment of most sexually transmitted diseases; HIV and Hepatitis C testing is available on Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., at 107 Lafayette St., Norwich. No appointment needed. No new registrations accepted after 7 p.m. The clinic will be closed on Monday, May 25, for the Memorial Day holiday.
