Colorectal Surgery
Surgery to remove cancer is the most common treatment for all stages of colorectal cancer.
Surgery Choices
Surgical options include:
- Local excision. A small area of colorectal cancer can usually be removed during colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy if it is confined to a very small area, such as a single polyp. An incision in the abdomen is not needed for this type of surgery.
- Polypectomy. A suspicious polyp can usually be removed during colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. An incision in the abdomen is not needed for this type of surgery.
- Bowel resection to remove cancer cells and a portion of the surrounding tissue of the colon.
