The surgical services department at the William W. Backus Hospital is one of the largest areas of the facility, consisting of the following departments:
Same Day Surgery

Same Day surgery is performed for a wide range of routine and/or minor procedures for which an overnight admission is not necessary. Patients are able to recuperate at home. The unit is staffed by a friendly and professional group of surgical nurses and technicians, who are committed to patient comfort and education.
Directions to Same Day Surgery:
Main Hospital entrance - Go to the elevators when you walk in. Press "1" button. Turn right and then right again . Follow the hallway until you see a sign for the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit. Then turn left. The Same Day Surgical unit is at the end of the hall.
Emergency Room entrance - Follow the hallway when you walk through the door. Take a left at the end of the hallway, and the elevator will be on your immediate left. Go up one floor and turn right. The Same Day Surgical unit is at the end of the hall.
E-1 Surgical Suite

Backus Hospital's E-1 surgical suite consists of thirteen operating rooms for patients undergoing both same day and admitted procedures. The surgical suite is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment such as flat screen technology.
Attending to patient comfort is an integral part of care in the surgical suite. Each patient area has a television and telephone. To provide the highest level of service and to ensure communication, the hospital offers a language phone that immediately translates 40 languages. Patient rights are also offered in braille for the blind. Pictograms are used for the hearing impaired as well.
The surgical and recovery nurses are highly skilled in their field, addressing not only the physical needs of their patients, but the psychological, emotional, and educational as well.

Pre-Admission Testing & Education

Pre-Admission Testing & Education (PAT) is provided to teach patients and family members about the surgical procedure. Pre-operative labwork and other testing is typically done at the same time. All patients are encouraged to schedule PAT within 30 days prior to surgery.
Operating Rooms (OR)

The operating rooms are where the surgical procedures take place. Backus has 13 state-of-the-art operating rooms. The OR is staffed by a highly trained group of nurses and technicians.
Endoscopy

The endoscopy department at Backus performs diagnostic procedures such as endoscopy, colonoscopy, and flexible sigmoidoscopy. It consists of three procedure rooms, staffed by a team of nurses and technicians.
For outpatient procedures, pre-register one half-hour before your scheduled appointment. The endoscopy unit is located on the 2nd floor, B-wing hallway.
Anesthesia

The anesthesia department provides a range of services including pain management, and several levels of sedation for surgical procedures. These include general, regional, monitored anesthesia care (MAC) and local. Backus has approximately twenty anesthesiologists and nurse anesthestist or CRNAs. Your anesthesiologist is involved in your care from pre-op, throughout your surgery, to recovery.
