5. Take your tests
Getting the right screening at the right time is a smart way to stay on
top of health situations - and detect any problems while they may be
treated easily, with less time, discomfort, risk - and expense. For
men, this means a prostate exam. For women, this includes a mammogram
and cervical (Pap) test. T. Casey McCullough, DO, a board-certified
urologist on the Backus Medical Staff, said the American Urological
Association recommends at age 40 men should start having a discussion
with their primary care provider about when to start screening with a
PSA test. Men who have a significant family history of prostate cancer
or who are African-American should have a screening at age 40 to
establish a baseline.
Fast fact
Most screenings cost little or nothing - Backus offer many that are free - but the cost of not receiving care is incalculable.
