3. Get enough sleep
Ben Franklin may have had it right: A solid night’s sleep could make
you “healthy, wealthy and wise.” Well, healthy, at least. A good rest
makes a huge difference in how we cope with everyday challenges. Mari
Adachi, MD, a Backus pulmonologist who specializes in sleep disorders,
said good sleep habits are essential to a good night’s rest. Tips
include: keeping your bedroom dark and keeping the temperature
cooler. At bedtime, she said, avoid big meals, alcohol,
caffeine, smoking and exercise. Even if you don’t have a sleeping
disorder, you can take steps to get some decent shut-eye.
Fast fact
The annual direct cost of sleep-related problems in this country is $16
billion, with an additional $50-$100 billion in indirect costs
(accidents, litigation, property destruction, hospitalization and
death).
