4. See your doctor regularly
TV commercials and magazine ads implore Americans to “ask your doctor
about (fill in the name of the medication).” But the truth is, we
should all establish a relationship with a physician, and see her or
him at least once a year. “Having a relationship with your doctor and
getting regular physicals is extremely important,” said Claire Warren,
MD, a member of the Backus Medical Staff who practices at the
Plainfield Walk-In Medical Center. “Doctors need to know your family
history, so we know what we are watching for to prevent disease in the
future.” Many of us put off doctor visits until we’re seriously ill.
Playing the waiting game can be very expensive, especially if patients
use the Emergency Department, but annual exams not only keep your body
running smoothly, they can save your life by providing early detection
of diseases and other ailments.
